Basic Navigation & Safety - Shorebased
In Autumn 2007 we are launching the new two-day RYA Basic Navigation and Safety course.
The course is aimed at a wide audience, including anyone new to sailing, motor boating, sea angling and diving as well as experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors and inshore racers.
Suggested Minimum Pre-course Experience: None Assumed Knowledge: None Course content: Charts and publications, safety, buoyage, tidal awareness, basic navigation and pilotage, rules of the road, electronic navigation, anchoring, weather forecasts, passage planning. Ability after course: Following the course students will have a basic awareness and understanding of navigation and safety. Minimum duration: 16 hours. Can be taught over 2 days or a series of shorter sessions. Mindful of the fact that people are increasingly short of time for leisure pursuits, the RYA has taken a new approach, aiming to give students an awareness and knowledge of basic navigation techniques and safety in just 16 hours.
This course is the perfect stepping stone to the more in-depth Day Skipper shorebased course, or to courses on the water such as the Intermediate Powerboat, Start Yachting, Helmsman or Day Skipper courses.
